Harry Treadaway Roped In For Lone Ranger
Matt O'Leary and more aboard tooAfter months of negotiating, shutdowns, renegotiations and script tweaking (which we like to imagine involved the oft-composed Jerry Bruckheimer flying into Hulk-style rages when he didn't get his way), Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp are finally cranking the cameras on The Lone Ranger. And they've locked in four more actors to round out the cast, with Harry Treadaway, Matt O'Leary, W. Earl Brown and Leon Rippy all aboard. Depp stars as Tonto alongside Armie Hammer's titular Ranger, John Reid in the story of betrayal, corruption, Old West heroism and, possibly, some supernatural elements all thrown into the script pot by writers Ted Elliot, Terry Rossio and Justin Haythe. While Rippy and Brown's roles have yet to be revealed, Variety reports that Treadaway and O'Leary will be members of the criminal gang led by Burt Cavendish (William Fichtner). They're all joining a cast that also includes Ruth Wilson, James Badge Dale, Tom Wilkinson and Barry Pepper.Treadaway has appeared in the likes of Control and City Of Ember and has Cockneys Vs Zombies stumbling through post-production. Matt O'Leary last showed up in In Time and has a role in Matthew Lillard's directorial debut, Fat Kid Rules The World. Brown is in Sundance hit The Surrogate and currently appears on HBO's Luck and Rippy has been busy on TV drama Alcatraz. The Lone Ranger will arrive on May 31, 2013.

Truth elbows out gags
'Bridesmaids' authors Kristen Wiig, left, and Annie Mumolo 'wrote everything out' but allow the cast try improvisation around the set.Extemporized scripts for example "Borat," or individuals built through improv like "Another Year," from time to time garner Oscar love. However the Authors Guild continues to be more passionate about this style, nominating numerous records by having an impromptu feel, including "Very best in Show," "The Hangover" and (from the Judd Apatow stable) "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Knocked Up" which year's "Bridesmaids."Apatow credits "the enormous quantity of comedy authors within the guild, a lot more compared to the Movie Academy. People who've written comedy for television know very well what we are doing."It's known as "behavior comedy," states "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig. TV's pioneering handheld "Work,Inch and loose, naturalistic features like "Awaiting Guffman," whetted audience appetites for additional reality and less gags."Jokes by themselves distance the crowd in the reality, simply because they have to have a response," Feig states. "And when they do not destroy, you often mistrust those who made the film.InchConsider the first 'Austin Forces,' which offered itself on individuals giant set-pieces and large gags. But what is the funniest a part of that? Dr. Evil and the boy, that 'Don't talk' goofing the realistic a sense of fun where they are just messing around. Or maybe not, they seem like they're.InchAround the set, Apatow declares, "The rule is we may perform the scene, but when at any time any actor will get a concept, we encourage him to tennis ball so the script. Many of the great moments came from improvisations which were essential for the stars to surprise one another." The resulting string of hits has built an exceptional Apatow style that's near to being its very own genre."Nowadays, people greatly want honesty," Feig states. "You've really reached allow the stars result in the words fit from their mouths," a procedure that starts with structure. Yes, there's some improvisation in "Bridesmaids," "but we'd a guide.InchAmong the individuals who came that roadmap, the pic's star and co-author Kristen Wiig, states, "It is so hard to check out the ultimate product and think what percentage was improvised and written, but we authored everything out."Meaning, as writing partner Annie Mumolo puts it: "We'd a shooting script that was the smallest version, and that we always shot that first."But previous drafts produced comedy fodder, which sometimes grew to become laff gold. Wiig and Rose Byrne's "dueling toasts" sequence, Apatow states, arrived on the scene of riffing on the score of suggestions.Around the group of "50/50," reviews WGA nominee Will Reiser: "As lengthy once we got that which was around the page, we gave the stars the liberty to feel loose." A long sequence of aged cancer patients talking about old-time radio, he states, "is totally improvised and something of my personal favorite moments."Many writers' fave moments were born of improv. A rambling Paul Reiser "Diner" speech opened up Apatow's adolescent eyes to "how truthful and natural comedy might be.Inch And Mumolo hasn't forgotten Bill Murray's "Caddyshack" description of golf using the Dalai Lama."I believe I heard somewhere it was improvised. I really hope so. That'd cause me to feel so happy!"WGA Honours 2012Truth elbows out gags Good timing for WGA prexyHonoreesKress & McDuffie Eric Roth Tate Taylor Patric Verrone Zwick & Herskovitz Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Globes trial zeroes in on key meetings
The trial over the broadcast rights to the Golden Globes on Wednesday focused on what Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. board members remembered -- or didn't -- about crucial meetings at which rights to the kudocast and the org's contract with Dick Clark Prods. were discussed. The HFPA sued DCP in 2010 after its longtime producer landed a new contract with NBC without the press org's approval. Attorneys for HFPA have been trying to show that there is a history of the org giving permission to DCP to enter into new deals with the Peacock network. Often cited is a July, 2001 membership meeting. But the minutes of that gathering make no mention of any discussion of a proposed $100 million pact with NBC that would have given the network rights to the show over 10 years. Lorenzo Soria, an HFPA member and former board member and prexy, said he was "reasonably certain" that a vote took place in which the org gave its signoff to the deal. He said it was a "logical deduction according to history and tradition" that members would have weighed in on such an important contract. He also said that the transcript of a meeting the following year, in which he reminded then-DCP prexy Francis LaMaina that members had voted on the NBC deal, refreshed his memory. But attorneys for DCP challenge whether such approval ever took place, citing a dearth of written evidence that it occurred. They also have attempted to show inconsistencies between sworn statements that Soria made and in what he says on the witness stand, typically over how certain he is in his memory of events. HFPA's suit against DCP centers on the interpretation of an "extensions" clause in a 1993 amendment to an earlier agreement. DCP claims that it gives them the rights to produce the Globes as long as it could secure a deal with NBC. Among other things, the HFPA's attorneys have been trying to show that LaMaina failed to mention the existence of the clause when he appeared before a membership meeting in September 1993. But LaMaina testified that he left copies of the amendment with members, and that it was up to them to take a look at it. Contact Ted Johnson at ted.johnson@variety.com
